Union notifies appointment of three judges in Supreme Court

New Delhi : President Draupadi Murmu has approved  appointments of three new judges in supreme court based on the recommendation of the collegium headed by the Chief Justice. The President has appointed Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court N.V. Anjaria, Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Vijay Bishnoi and Chief Justice of Bombay High Court A.S. Chandurkar as Judges of the Supreme Court. After these appointments, the number of judges in the Supreme Court has become 34, which is equal to the total sanctioned strength of judges there.

Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared information about the appointment of judges on the social media platform X. He wrote that on the basis of the consultation of the Chief Justice and the powers granted by the Constitution, the President has appointed three new judges. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the promotion of these judges on 26 May.

The collegium headed by CJI Justice BR Gavai had sent a recommendation to the central government to promote these three High Court judges to the Supreme Court. Now all three judges will take oath on Friday morning at 10:30. Supreme Court Chief Justice Gavai will administer the oath of office to them. With their appointment, the Supreme Court will again reach its full judicial capacity – the number of 34 judges.
