Justice Yashwant Varma Cash Row : Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on Saturday constituted a three-member committee to probe allegations of unaccounted cash found at the official residence of Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court. The CJI ordered an internal probe after receiving a report from Delhi High Court Chief Justice DK Upadhyay and asked him not to assign any judicial work to Justice Verma.
Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court Justice GS Sandhawalia and Justice Anu Sivaraman of Karnataka High Court have been made members of the inquiry committee. A statement issued by the apex court said that the report submitted by the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, Justice Verma’s reply and other documents are being uploaded on the Supreme Court website.
Earlier, Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay submitted his preliminary investigation report to Supreme Court Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna in the case of huge amount of unaccounted cash found from the official residence of Justice Yashwant Varma.
On the night of March 14, firefighters found cash after a fire broke out at Varma’s residence in Lutyens Delhi. Verma was not at home at the time of the incident. The Chief Justice conducted an internal investigation and collected evidence and information. Now the Supreme Court will investigate the Collegium report, after which a decision will be taken on further action against Varma.
